Social Media Marketing and So Much For Transparency

Well it seems like Andy Jenkins and crew over at Stompernet have, well, stomped in it. “It” being the result of maybe too much transparency.
In their bid to comply with the Web 2.0 idea of being transparent and giving away as much good free content as you can they have managed to ruffle some feathers by the looks of things.
Explaining a process of social media marketing and talking about how a certain site was a great source of outgoing links, they immediately changed.
Scribd.com, the site in question is no longer “great for creating incoming links to your site.” And as a result Andy has decided to pull his SMARTS program for the time being.
To be honest I’ve got a couple opinions on this one, big surprise. If I am correct Ed Dale of Thirty Day Challenge is part of the alumni of Stompernet. In the TDC during August last year they had a similar experience.
It was mentioned to everyone that Tumblr was a great platform to use for part of the challenge as a free blog site. Well the resulting flurry of activity to Tumblr and I’m sure more than one spammy site, wreaked havoc on servers and anyone even remotely connected to the TDC was banned and their blog dumped.
Now I would have thought that Ed would have mentioned what happens when you tell a hungry eager crowd about “a” great place to go to set up shop.
Then again, maybe this was just another really good experiment in the power of social marketing
What do you think?
